Does the wifi still transmit on a printer even if you choose usb connection?

I just bought a canon pixma mx882. I set it up for usb connection, but last night my son suffered from what seemed like his extreme wifi headaches he used to get when our house was wireless. Is it possible that this printer is transmitting wifi waves just because it has the capability to do so? And, if so, is there a way to shut the wifi off like I do on the laptop?
