If nintendo had skipped the gamecube and went straight to the wii what would have happened?

Considering that the gamecube was nintendos biggest console failure while the wii is pretty much its biggest success and the only real difference is a controller it would have made a lot of sense. Graphically the will is more on par with the ps2 and xbox than it is with the 360 and ps3. I think if nintendo had just waited a year or two they could have had the available technology to skip the gamecube and make the wii by atleast 2003. How would this have effected the console wars? The wii may have been able to beat the ps2 but probably not it would have definitely beat the xbox maybe even drove it out of. The console wars. The wii is becoming outdated show by the fact that there are already plans for its successor while its competition says there systems have another 5 year lifespan before a new console. Does it seem like nintendo should have skipped the gamecube?
