Telephone Communication?

How is the sound transmitted in Telephone? I read in a book that sound waves strike the metal plate. on striking it the plate vibrates, which induces the change in magnetic field linked with the magnet. This change is then transmitted as electric signals. Then after further conversion into electric signals, we hear on the other side.Is is true? yes/no please explain me in detail.
