How does a Telephone transmit data?

A wired telephone uses tones to transmit data. One tone represents a 0, and the other tone represents a 1. By switching back and forth between the tones the data travels over the phone network. The faster the tones switch back and forth, the faster the baud rate of the connection, and the more data that can be sent per second.
